Octarine (www.octarinebio.com) is a synthetic biology company developing high-value pharmaceutical and consumer ingredients to improve the health and well-being of people world-wide. Through our advanced enzymatic modification platforms, and using the power of metabolic engineering, we develop cell factories that can efficiently produce therapeutic molecules via fermentation and biocatalysis, expanding on the impressive repertoire that nature already provides with novel chemical modifications unachievable with traditional methods. We are a young and ambitious team rapidly expanding to scale-up our unique technology. While our interests are broad, we have a core focus on cannabinoids and psychedelics, and work to sustainably manufacture these molecules for therapeutic use and to modify and improve them to overcome some of their biggest limitations.


Do you want to do an internship or research project (for your BSc or MSc thesis) at Octarine?

We’re opening a brand new, state-of-the-art research lab in central Copenhagen, with capacity to take on student research projects in a variety of areas. Students will have full access to Octarine’s lab facility and will be mentored and supervised one on one by an expert industrial research scientist. Most importantly, students will have the opportunity to tackle a real-world research problem with immediate industrial application.




Projects are offered in one of the following broad research areas

  • Biocatalysis: Design and screen enzymes catalysing novel chemical reactions, scale-up biocatalytic reactions to produce new drug candidates for further screening
  • Yeast metabolic engineering: Engineer yeast to produce natural or novel molecules with interesting application, or design and implement genetic strategies to improve production from already established biosynthetic pathways
  • Fermentation optimization: Design, implement and optimize fermentation processes to scale the production of Octarine’s molecules
  • Downstream purification: Design, implement and optimize purification processes to meet the stringent GMP requirements needed to bring our molecules in human clinical trials
  • Analytical chemistry: Develop methods to detect and quantify metabolites from Octarine’s in vivo pre-clinical studies. Develop and validate robust analytical methods to ensure quality control during the drug manufacturing process
  • Pre-clinical studies: Evaluate the pharmacokinetic and therapeutic properties of novel drug candidates coming from Octarine’s biosynthetic platforms. Implement in vitro and in vivo assays to identify promising molecules for further study.


Requirements

We can offer internships or research projects as part of ongoing or recently completed academic studies. This means you should be an active University or Higher Education student looking to do a research project as part of your academic studies (e.g. a thesis), an internship as part of your course requirements (e.g. an industrial internship), or you should be a recently graduated student looking to gain work experience before embarking on a career (e.g. Erasmus internship).

Additionally, you should have a solid theoretical understanding of at least one of the research areas listed above, as well as some practical hands-on experience working in the field.
