Program Director, UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics

The UC Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics (BCSP) is a multidisciplinary research and education center exploring psychedelics for the benefit of all. Our work has three key pillars; 1) world-leading academic research into the role and nature of psychedelics, 2) a best-in-class training program for psychedelic facilitation, and 3) an agenda-setting program of public education & journalism about psychedelic science, history, politics, culture, and therapeutic value.


About the position


The BCSP's Program Director is a new role tasked with supporting, managing, and delivering our diverse portfolio of innovative, impactful, and inclusive public programs related to psychedelic science. You will play a pivotal role in the future of the BCSP and psychedelic science by working with a talented group of researchers, educators, staff, external partners, and students to maximize the impact of our existing programs and to lead new ones.


Our existing programs are driven and supported by a talented and innovative team at the BCSP; as Program Director, you will join them to create synergies in our existing work, and bring in project management best-practices to enhance it. You will also take on a leadership role in delivering a number of key programs directly, and work closely with Center leadership and fundraising colleagues to design and deliver new program concepts that align with the Center's mission. You will report to the Executive Director of the BCSP, and work closely with other staff, faculty, and partners to help deliver our mission.


Prior experience of psychedelic science or education is not required, but as the successful candidate you will be able to demonstrate and share an appreciation of why the BCSP's missions and programs are important and relevant. You will also bring experience of delivering social impact, public education, or mission-driven programs for many years across a range of different types of teams and organizations. You'll have experience of managing program budgets of at least $0.5m, and show that you can apply a range of different program and project management tools and frameworks flexibly, depending on the need at hand.


Responsibilities:


  • Program & project management leadership and support for the BCSP's public program portfolio.
  • Design and delivery of new mission-aligned programs that are high-impact and financially sustainable.
  • Select & supervise key contractors and other program delivery partners.
  • Ensure our program portfolio lives up to DEI best-practice, and lead DEI-specific programs.
  • Support BCSP financial sustainability by focusing on revenue generation opportunities, reporting on program impacts for donors, and identifying new donor interest.
  • Budget management, analysis, and planning across program portfolio.
  • Robust evaluation and continuous improvement of existing program portfolio, as well as individual projects.
  • Stakeholder management, including donor stewardship and partnership development.
  • Implementation and support for project management best-practice principles across the BCSP.
  • Representing the BCSP to campus stakeholders and at key external events.
  • Staying abreast of latest developments in psychedelic science and education.


Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of a variety of program & project management frameworks and how to apply them.
  • Demonstrated ability in delivering impactful public programs.
  • Experience of managing six-figure or greater program budgets
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, and ability to determine relevance and prioritize tasks.
  • Demonstrated advanced effective writing skills, advanced knowledge of all aspects of communications, and demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with all levels of an organization.
  • Proven leadership ability; effective problem-solving skills, and demonstrated ability to put forth persuasive arguments.
  • Effective skill at tracking effort and project progress; demonstrated highly advanced organization and project management skills, demonstrated strong conceptual and planning skills to analyze projects of broad and diverse scope, understands the cost impact of projects, project tracking tools and metrics.
  • Knowledge of how to evaluate and improve social impact or education programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop new revenue-generating, mission-aligned programs.
  • Ability to select, manage, and supervise external contractors and partners.
